Calize Country House
We both love Cornwall and try to live and run our business as sustainably as possible to keep Cornwall beautiful and special for ever. We are members of COAST, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Surfers Against Sewage and the Cornwall Seal Group.
We try to purchase locally as much as possible to minimise leakages of £’s from the local economy. There is a list of local restaurants and pubs with sample menus in the sitting room. We buy food locally from our fantastic farm shops and so reduce transport miles and support the local economy. Throughout the house are the works of local artist Mike Hindle. We even have a range made in Cornwall that as well as cooking, heats all our water and runs the central heating.
We are slowing changing all our light bulbs to energy efficient ones and all new appliances are chosen with efficiency in mind. Please switch off lights and television standby buttons when you are not in your room so that light pollution and CO2 emissions are reduced so that you too can enjoy the beautiful stars at night! There are individual thermostats on all the radiators for you to control as well. We line dry laundry when weather permits.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle
We recycle as much as we can and compost all organic waste, unless we feed it to the hens that supply you with fresh eggs daily! Occasionally Charlie may get a prime morsel! We try not to use plastic bags and excessive packaging and have put a jute COAST shopping bag in your room for you to use whilst in Cornwall.
We try to encourage our guests to enjoy the local area by foot or on bicycles – the fabulous beach, the seal colony opposite the Lighthouse, the headlands and South West Coast Path, the sandunes, the Red River Inn, the Jam Pot, Sunset Café on Gwithian Towans, the Sandsifter and the National Trust café at Godrevy are all easily accessible by foot. Bicycles are available for longer distances. If you want to travel further then we have lots of suggestions you may be able to get to by local rail and bus services.
Water is a precious commodity especially in Cornwall. All of our rooms have showers and we have inserted hippo water restrictors in our toilet cisterns. There is an extra bathroom which can be used by any of our guests, but please use water wisely. We collect rainwater for our vegetables and pots.
The code reminds us all to protect, respect and enjoy. Take litter away, look after plants and animals, leave gates and property as you find them and consider other people and users when out and about.
FEEL GOOD, ENJOY CORNWALL
and have a FANTASTIC HOLIDAY
